Harvey Weinstein's Golden Boy!

Harvey Weinstein Banking on Ryan!

Just one year after Ava DuVernay made history as the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Award at Sundance Film Festival for “Middle of Nowhere”, director Ryan Coogler continued the tradition of Black excellence by nabbing both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for his film “Fruitvale.”

According to Shadow and Act, only three other films have won both the Audience and Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. “Fruitvale” which tales the story of Oscar Grant’s tragic shooting by a transit officer in Oakland California, has received glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike for its emotional authenticity. Earlier this week, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein purchased “Fruitvale” for $2 million dollars, to be distributed by Weinstein Films. Weinstein has an impeccable record of getting his projects on the awards rosters – two of his current films “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook” are up for multiple Academy Award nominations. Expect Coogler and “Fruitvale” star Michael B. Jordan to hit the red carpet at next year’s Oscar Awards.

Congrats to Ryan Coogler and the cast and crew of “Fruitvale”! Harvey Weinstein is looking forward to dominating the Academy Awards 2014 as well!

Music Video Review

Keke Palmer

"Dance Alone" Music Video Review

I'm super proud of Keke Palmer she is very well molded for the Entertainment Industry. She has been able to transformer in to a sexy young woman. Her video moved me to say she's not in spelling bee's anymore. The music video for "dance alone" is pretty fair nothing to spectacular. But to see Keke P. as a little sex kitten was worth the watch. The dance combinations were very cool and smooth. This is where Raven and Kyla Pratt fell off, Keke is doing it right. However the lacking of beauty shoots kept me wanting more of her alone in some of the scenes but hopefully her next video will have a cup more of versatility.

Why you gots to LIE?

Why Do Black Men LIE?

A few Saturdays ago, some coworkers and I were having a discussion. It was a few men and women of varying ages. The subject turned to “why men lie so much.”

Now, I’m not the guy to get into this discussion heavily on most days. This Saturday wasn’t a usual day though. I asked two seemingly simple, but loaded questions in response:
“Why do women say ‘just tell me the truth’ from jump?”

“When a man does tell y’all the truth, why do you get upset?”
I should’ve worn my body armor before the answers started flying. Through it all though, I never really got an answer other than some form of “because men ain’t sh*t” or “men are liars.” Suffice it to say, no meaningful discourse became of the conversation, as stereotypes, cliches, and jokes took over.

It bothered me because I really wanted to know. So after most of the group dissipated, I asked the lone remaining lady there the questions again. Once she got past her personal feelings about men, she gave me two generally (chick) logical answers.

To my first question, she said (paraphrased), “We (women) want to know a man’s intentions from the beginning, or at least within the first few conversations.” To the second she answered, “it depends on the circumstances.” I let her slide on her first response, at least initially, because I had to think about that one more.

On her second answer, I needed clarification. She informed me that the circumstances depended on question one. And here is where she started losing me.
For us (men) to be forthright with a woman would mean divulging what we want from them at the outset of meeting, exchanging information, etc.

I know I am not the only man who has fallen for the setup of “If a guy only wants sex, then he should say so, because hell, that could be all I want too.” In my Dusk (pre-Darrk days), I was honest about it. I was doing what women said they wanted, or so I thought. Well, this level of bluntness usually had the opposite effect on the women I applied it with. Not only did I not G.T.D., but I was called all manner of trifling and dog. Needless to say I was confused. As I got older, I found that that level of honesty was presented the wrong way.

How I approached it was deemed disrespectful. I couldn’t be so blunt and expect to acquire what I was after. Learning nuances was key. So I changed my approach, while still maintaining honesty, and things changed. My muse for that moment told me I had learned a valuable lesson that other men should, and it’s an old one: “It’s not what you say, but how you say it.” I still had to understand her reasoning for her second answer though.

This was compounded off the first answer, and my understanding of it. There was another part of it though. She told me about the difference between a man telling relative truth versus absolute truth.

Relative truth, for most purposes, is intertwined with telling someone what they want to hear. It could probably be called “little white lies,” but that doesn’t sound nice. The classic example of this is if a woman were to ask a man how something looks on her, or how her cooking tastes. His answer is based on factors such as what he gets out the deal, and how much peace he may or may not lose. It’s relative to HIS perception of the situation. So he’ll give an answer that preserves his peace…for now.

But, we’re men. It’s probable that the question will come up again and our answers change. Or she’ll wear the outfit we don’t particularly care for, or cook a dish we don’t like again. Now that relative truth is consistently present, even if the relativity of it has changed. We’ve given our version of a peacekeeping truth, when deep down we know it’s a load of crap.

Time marches on for a few weeks, or months and a disagreement arises between ol’ boy and his girl. He starts spitting his true feelings about her food or wardrobe. All of a sudden, the issue that caused the initial disagreement is forgotten because the absolute truth has been revealed. So while he wants to focus on the issue at hand, she’s more concerned about the bullshiggity he’s been giving her. If the absolute had been shared in the beginning, there might have been some hurt feelings, but at least he’d have been forthright. Now, she’s wondering if she can trust anything he’s said.
There are two takeaways I got from this discussion: 1) Even if it may cause some hurt feelings initially, men should just be upfront when asked how they feel about something. It’ll save us stress later. 2) Women need the truth from us for self-preservation. There are some savages out here. Plus, if we can be upfront about what we want, it cuts the bs for us and them. We’ll seem confident and assured of ourselves. It’s a win-win for everybody.

2 Chainz Honored

Hip Hop Inaugural Ball awards 2 Chainz and other Legends

2 Chainz, MC Lyte, John Legend & More Honored At The Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball

John Legend was awarded the humanitarian award while Hip-hop pioneers MC Lyte and Doug E. Fresh were both given lifetime achievement awards.

2 Chainz earned the street solider award for encouraging young voters as a spokesperson for the Hip-Hop Caucus’ “Respect My Vote!” campaign. Actress Rosario Dawson won the vanguard award for her work as chairman of the Voto Latino organization.

An idea originally launched by Russell Simmons brought Hip-Hop’s legends and current stars together to honor a few that are responsible for what the genre is today. The evening was hosted by LaLa Anthony and Terrence J and may arguable be the most star-studded event of last weekend.

Dr. West Speaks Out!

Say What?

Dr. Cornel West says that President Barack Obama doesn’t deserve to be sworn in for his second term as President of the United States with his hand on the bible of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“You don’t play with Martin Luther King, Jr. and you don’t play with his people, said West. “By his people, I mean people of good conscience, fundamentally good people committed to peace and truth and justice, especially the Black tradition that produced it.

“All of the blood, sweat and tears that went into producing a Martin Luther King, Jr. generated a brother of such high decency and dignity that you don’t use his prophetic fire for a moment of presidential pageantry without understanding the challenge he represents to all of those in power regardless of what color they are.

"The righteous indignation of a Martin Luther King, Jr. becomes a moment of political calculation. And that makes my blood boil. Why? Because Martin Luther King, Jr died…he died…for the three crimes against humanity that he was wrestling with. Jim Crow, traumatizing, terrorizing, stigmatizing Black people. Lynching, not just ‘segregation’ as the press likes to talk about.

"Second: Carpet bombing in Vietnam killing innocent people, especially innocent children, those are war crimes that Martin Luther King , Jr. was willing to die for. And thirdly, was poverty of all colors, he said it is a crime against humanity for the richest nation in the world to have so many of it’s precious children of all colors living in poverty and especially on the chocolate side of the nation, and on Indian reservations and Brown barrios and yellow slices and Black ghettos — we call them hoods now, but ghettos then.

“So I said to myself ain’t nothing wrong with putting your hand on the bible, even though the bible’s talking about justice, Jesus is talking about the least of these, but when you put it on Martin’s bible, I said ‘this is personal for me,’ because this is the tradition that I come out of.”

Dr. West continues to say that President Obama’s actions as president are in direct contradiction to the principles and beliefs of Dr. King, and then presents hypothetical questions that he would ask the slain Civil Rights leader if he were alive today:

“Brother Martin Luther King, Jr., what you say about the New Jim Crow? What would say about the Prison Industrial Complex? What would you say about the invisibility of so many of our prisoners, so many of our incarcerated, especially when 62 percent of them are there for soft drugs and not one executive of a Wall Street bank gone to jail. Not one. Martin doesn’t like that. Not one wire-tapper, not one torturer under the Bush Administration — at all,” said West.

"Then what would he say about the drones on the precious brothers and sisters in Pakistan, and Somalia, and Yemen. Those are war crimes, just like war crimes in Vietnam, Martin Luther King, Jr., what would you say?”

I think that it’s morally obscene and spiritually profane to spend $6 billion on an election, $2 billion on a presidential election, and not have any serious discussion—poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the 1 percent are doing very well, no talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama, so that our struggle with regard to poverty intensifies.

So is Dr. West approaching the view of Dr. King's legacy of overcoming a struggle for a people or is President Obama playing into the role of he is the American Dream, yet his education and bloodline speak of biological relation to past presidents, european royalty and African King and Queen ancestry. Something to think about.

Booted!

Lupe OUT!

The lights went out, the microphone went off, but it was no accident. It was Lupe Fiasco's cue to get off the stage after the rapper made some anti-Obama comments via his controversial song "Words I Never Said."

The Chicago emcee dedicated his entire 30 minute set to the track, begging the question: Why would the event's promoter, StartUp RockOn choose an act that was blatantly opposed to the person being celebrated?

Anyone who knows Lupe knows that he has never shied away from expressing disdain for the president, as well as various political pundits in his songs. In fact in 2011 he even made headlines after calling President Obama "the biggest terrorist in the United States of America."

In this particular verse, Lupe criticized the president for what Lupe believed to be a passive attitude in dealing with certain foreign affairs, according to RhymesWithSnitch.com.

"Limbaugh is a racist / Glen Beck is a racist / Gaza Strip was getting bombed / Obama didn't say s**t / That's why I ain't vote for him/next one, either / I'm part of the problem / my problem is I'm peaceful," he rapped repeatedly for what Rolling Stone called "an unusually long time," before having his power cut off.

StartUp RockOn released a statement to HyperVocal.com proclaiming that it was not the message that got Lupe Fiasco booted, but rather the awkwardly repetitive nature of his short set.

"We are staunch supporters of free speech, and free political speech. This was not about his opinions," they wrote. "Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act."

No comment from Lupe's people has been made as of yet.

Second Chances!

Did Second Generation Wayans deliver?

According to TV by the numbers 4.7 million people watch the all over the place show. So it did deliver! I know BET is jumping jacks over at the office. Not too fast. I still don't get the plot of the show.

When I first heard that BET was coming out with this show I thought it was going to be a true reality TV however, this show is very much scripted featuring Craig Wayans, Damien Dante Wayans, Tatyana Ali, and George Gore II. However, to my disappointment it was a show that I feel was poorly advertise and organized. The introduction of the show basically gives the viewer the basis of the show Craig and Dante are trying to find their way in the entertainment industry. George is the honorary Wayans and he well........I still don’t know what he is doing? Also Maya (Tatyana Ali) she was Dante’s assistant but quit to work on her dreams for money.

I understand that BET is trying to revamp however coming out with average TV series was not the greatest move for long term basis. On a positive note, I will watch one more time to be fair but after that if it doesn't come together I will not watch. One final note, I think the numbers will decline. But I digress.

Win or Loss?

Win or Lose

The Plight of HBCU’s: Win or Loss?
Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCU’s as they are commonly referred to, have long been a pillar for education for African Americans.

Dating back to 1837 with the founding of Cheney University of Pennsylvania, these institutions have produced countless leaders in all fields. However, are these influential institutions still making the same impact in today’s society, a society so easily influenced?
Could it be that these institutions are not the same as they were doing the days of Martin King or Howard Thurman, or is that students aren’t as receptive to the standards of education as those who came before them?

It seems as if the students that comprise these institutions today are of a different breed. This is the type of breed that disrespects women who should be looked upon as sisters, a breed that feels it necessary to peruse their campuses inappropriately dressed with quite a vulgar vocabulary. This type of behavior is disrespectful to the shoulders we certainly stand upon. Are HBCU’s failing at educating our people? And will we ever return to a place where HBCU’s are a beacon of hope for our people? Only time will tell.

Music Video Review

Love & War

Tamar Braxton's video "Love and War" finally dropped. All I can say is Sexy.com. Just when you thought revealing ballads were becoming extinct, Queen Tamar pulls a home run out of her many Loubintin's. It's soft, intimate with timeless silhouettes. Music was in need of some vitamin R&B and Love and War was the doctor that brought it back to life!! This power ballad proves that if you really want a relationship to work, you will tackle the highs and lows. But in the end, the love is deeper, stronger and better than before.

Blonde Brothers

Black & Blonde?????

Scientists have finally figured out how some of the dark-skinned inhabitants of the Solomon Islands have naturally blonde hair.

Researchers used to believe the blonde hair came from interaction with European people, however, a group from Stanford has detected a genetic difference in the blondes. They swabbed the cheeks of 85 people, 43 with blonde hair, to compare their DNA to that of people with darker hair and found a chromosomal difference caused the blonde hair. The researcher identified a change in the gene TYRP1, which affects pigment in humans as the cause.

The scientists consider the effect to be very unique. “The difference is at a frequency of 26 percent in the Solomon Islands, is absent outside of Oceania, represents a strong common genetic effect on a complex human phenotype, and highlights the importance of examining genetic associations worldwide,” said the abstract of the report.

The team was stunned by their findings. “They have this very dark skin and bright blond hair. It was mind-blowing,” one of the researchers stated. “As a geneticist on the beach watching the kids playing, you count up the frequency of kids with blond hair, and say, ‘Wow, it’s 5 to 10 percent’.”

Eimear Kenny, co-author of the study, has similar feelings. “‘Within a week we had our initial result. It was such a striking signal pointing to a single gene — a result you could hang your hat on,” he said. “That rarely happens in science.” This also leads to prove that the ancient Egyptians where black.

These children have inspired major artist such as Amerie, Rita Ora, Kimora Lee and Soulja Boy to rock a blonde crown of hair. We are all connected in this world buy our genetic make up but yet separated by out undeveloped ignorant views of one another.

Burger Flow

Saved by the Bell!

My friends and I live in Midtown Atlanta and the Buckhead area, it's so cool to get away from your parents for a few minutes. Yeah! Burger is a cool spot for you and your friends to go with your parents in the next booth over. It's contemporary and comfort food for the Fam. The BURGERS are awesome, so if you want to bond with a younger person or teenager/middle school student this is the spot. Hope you enjoy it like do!

Lady O.

For the love of O.

The songstress Olivia is one of the few hip hop treasures that is consistently tossed around in the music industry. Lady O has a voice I believe in, but great art from her is an epic fail. However I've grown to love her as a person as she fights for her own place in this new and more shady than ever industry. VH1's Love & Hip Hop gives her so much life! Ms Live is a shining poised diva that is at the edge of stardom, still. Cheers to Olivia hopefully she will drop an album of great work soon.

Lost State of Mind: Part 2

The Answer
"The State of our young Men"

I feel that the state of young black men shouldn't be put on hip hop's glamorization's. Hip Hop's influences are only seen as art to the Rappers or Poets at hand. Clearly the black community, mainly African American men should change their casual image, their talk and walk to ignite change in what the child sees after all they look up to what's presented. However mentoring is not the issue, the quality of mentoring is the problem. Expecting undereducated men to set the example is equal to Honey Boo Boo's mom giving parenting advice to a new Mom. So formatting change and the quality of man to set the standard should be also a major look at the tough situations our young black boys are put in.

Lost State of Mind

"State Of Our Young Men"

Mansions, fancy cars and all the women one man can handle. What message are we sending to our young men? Are these material things that tangible? Is working hard for success becoming a taboo? These are questions that are asked but one is never provided much clarity regarding answers or solutions. One major variable missing from the equation in MENTORING!!! There are too many misguided young men and not enough direction. I challenge all men to take time out of their lives to mentor a young man. To provide them with an understanding that when you set goals, execute them, the end result will be that mansion, that fancy car and a young woman that loves you for you and your accomplishments, not for the amount of money you have in your bank account.

Is Black Beautiful?

Is Black Beautiful?

In the latest Apple commercial the powerful champion Williams Sisters take on selling the iPhone and its latest features to the phone. I was somewhat blindsided to see the shift in their complexion. They both are more than beautiful and known for their dark rich skin. But in the commercial they are almost three shades lighter. I'm rather shocked and don't know if I should feel offended or not.

Album Review!

Rihanna's new album 'Unapologetic' gives me mixed vibes. For her seventh studio album Unapologetic is a flat album from the most pop culture driven artist on the charts right now. However talking about the controversial Chris Brown collaboration 'Nobody's Business', I can describe it as one in the eye for the kind of person who tells you modern pop music has nothing new to offer. Lol

I think the collection is "a mixed bag", and the first half of the album is full of abrasively ear-catching sound effects only, no real substance in the lyrics.

To add to the failed artistic attempt to be an innovative Pop star I wasn't appreciative of the second half of the album it switches to ballads, disco, reggae and naff rock for a gob-smacking defense of her confused love for R'n'B star Chris Brown". I will also note that Rihanna hasn't truly broken her mold of being overly edgy to make up for her lacking in vocal talent.

Also flipping through more styles than Lady GaGa at a sample sale doesn't make this album a winner, but she's delivered just enough to keep the "Brand Rihanna" chugging along.

To rate the album I would say 2 bullets out of 5.

I'm sure her fans will love it, but if you are a true art lover you will be disappointed.
