The lights went out, the microphone went off, but it was no accident. It was Lupe Fiasco's cue to get off the stage after the rapper made some anti-Obama comments via his controversial song "Words I Never Said."
The Chicago emcee dedicated his entire 30 minute set to the track, begging the question: Why would the event's promoter, StartUp RockOn choose an act that was blatantly opposed to the person being celebrated?
Anyone who knows Lupe knows that he has never shied away from expressing disdain for the president, as well as various political pundits in his songs. In fact in 2011 he even made headlines after calling President Obama "the biggest terrorist in the United States of America."
In this particular verse, Lupe criticized the president for what Lupe believed to be a passive attitude in dealing with certain foreign affairs, according to RhymesWithSnitch.com.
"Limbaugh is a racist / Glen Beck is a racist / Gaza Strip was getting bombed / Obama didn't say s**t / That's why I ain't vote for him/next one, either / I'm part of the problem / my problem is I'm peaceful," he rapped repeatedly for what Rolling Stone called "an unusually long time," before having his power cut off.
StartUp RockOn released a statement to HyperVocal.com proclaiming that it was not the message that got Lupe Fiasco booted, but rather the awkwardly repetitive nature of his short set.
"We are staunch supporters of free speech, and free political speech. This was not about his opinions," they wrote. "Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act."
No comment from Lupe's people has been made as of yet.
